It’s My Badge, I Earned It A rare look into the real-life experiences of a veteran Phoenix Police Officer. The author Anthony Boynton worked in Law Enforcement in various capacities from August 1973, continually through December 2010. He had an extremely rewarding career. The rewards were of a personal fulfillment, as he did not go into police work to amass a fortune or become wealthy. In the early portion of his career, Anthony felt as though he had a tiger by the tail. Where else would one be given a gun and a really fast car to drive around? Wow, to be twenty-four years of age and given this responsibility and not truly understand the importance of this gift until the world comes crumbling down around you. He entered the Phoenix Police Department at a time when only five officers had been killed in the line of duty in the City of Phoenix. The most recent was while he was in the academy. New officers had a tendency to drive too fast to their calls and most definitely overextend their abilities for the equipment they had at the time. Over time the technologies in Law Enforcement improved, by mere attrition things got better. Anthony believed that officers sometimes fall behind on their training which takes time and money. Officers need to come off the very streets they work to protect. This takes them away from the service product that they provide for the public. Police training proved to be a continuous process to maintain the excellence that the police department provided throughout his tenure on this police force. During his career, even though Anthony performed many different jobs in as many assignments, he felt the most rewarding was when he promoted to the position of supervisor. He was able to influence, mold, and turn a squad of police officers into a tight knit, smoothly functioning group of people that provide a vital service to the citizens of Phoenix. Anthony stated it was rewarding to become a leader and be able to help young officers grow professionally and personally. Anthony grew as a leader and enjoyed helping young officers become better at what they did, but he found his niche a little later in life. When he made the decision to pursue a supervisor role, it was because he had been allowed to develop in this capacity. He had a lot of talent to share with the people just beginning their careers. Police work is a very rewarding job, not in a financial sense, but in a sense of knowing that lives have changed because of our direct involvement. Anthony believed that officers by the very nature of the job performance are natural sales people and, more so, they are leaders. In several of the scenarios in this book, it is evident that police officers have to make split second decisions that can either end or alter lives. The leadership officers provide to the citizenry is evident, and can have a profound effect on our own lives as well. Society expects that officers put their lives on hold while they solve others’ problems. And for the most part the officers expect that of themselves as well. As a leader, Anthony found that if he remained less autocratic and allowed decisions to be made by others none of his actions would “foul up” the process at hand. One of the bosses on the Phoenix Police Department once told Anthony, “If you are not disciplining someone you are not doing your job.” Thank God, that mentality no longer lingers about the department. Through Anthony’s crazy, sarcastic type of humor, he always pushed the mission of the police department, and their goal as police officers. Only those people who worked for or around him truly understood this. Anthony Boynton hopes this book will show how challenges can be overcome and how fulfilling a career in law enforcement can be. It can also show what good leadership can bring as well.
