Eli knows corruption runs deep within the compound. It's a reality he's forced to confront every year on Bid Day. But when your job is to go out into the radiation-soaked Fringe so that others can live in peace, you don't ask too many questions.
For Harper, the bid system works just fine. She's the best developer in her year, and she's confident she'll find a place among the wealthy, respected Systems workers. But when an upset in the bidding changes the course of Harper's future, she'll be forced to rely on an unlikely ally - dark, unreadable Eli Parker.
In her search for answers, Harper will learn that in the compound, the truth doesn't set you free. It gets you killed.
Recon (Audible Audio Edition) Tarah Benner Michael Goldstrom Saskia Maarleveld Audible Studios Books
I stumbled across this book because I used to work in Recon - not in post-apocalypse Utah, but back when I was in the military. I'm also an inveterate sci-fi junkie...First things first:
This is a really good yarn! It's well paced, doesn't drag, and has very good plot development. One thing I really liked was how adept the author is at illustrating the background world with a few lines. There aren't reams and reams of text explaining a complex thing like,"how do these people eat?" but questions like that get answered. I feel like I've gotten a glimpse into a fascinating, complex world - one with some shadowy undercurrents....
I'll definitely read more in the series.
My only bitch is regarding how the training is depicted. Presumably, other stuff happens, but in this story the cadets spend a little time on the range, and a lot of time doing hand-to-hand stuff. There is SO MUCH MORE to being a scout than that. Land Navigation, tracking, orienteering, survival skills, use/maintenance of equipment, small unit tactics, etc. - none of that gets mentioned.
But that's a small bitch, as things go.
Hell - I even liked the burgeoning love story - and it takes a lot for a crusty old Marine to admit that in writing.

Recon (Audible Audio Edition) Tarah Benner Michael Goldstrom Saskia Maarleveld Audible Studios Books Reviews
After reading all 5 books, I was left shanking my head over inconsistencies in the story, too many storylines jumbled throughout the series, and unnecessary sudo-graphic sex scenes. After reading numerous dystopian series, The Fringe series did not fulfill my expectations of a good story. It was also difficult to remember "who" was talking, chapter by chapter; especially in the last few books. The difficulty stems from each character "read" very similarly. This was the first book written this way where I had to go back to the chapter title to remind myself who was talking.
I gave it 3 stars because it's not the worst series I've ever read, but it wavered around average. It had a fair to good start, and a lackluster ending. The bones of a good story where there, but this doesn't even come close to an addictive dystopian world. I was left feeling unfulfilled and wishing it was trimmed a couple books.
Tarah delivers! I received a copy of this book from the author for an honest review. I also bought the book because I loved it. If you love dystopian romance you will love this book. Eli and Harper are stubborn, smart, strong and likeable even though Eli sometimes comes off cold and difficult. The author does a great job of letting us inside their heads. You get them and feel like you know them. As Eli learns how deep the corruption is and Harper learns of the corruption, their lives will never be the same. The chemistry between them sizzles. I will not give the story away. You should read it for yourself. Tarah's attention to detail is outstanding and makes the story feel real. The weaving of perspectives is a talent as she creates a smooth, exciting story that leaves you wanting more.
Post nuclear society living in a dome and each person is divided into a 'faction' (sound familiar?) depending on an intelligence score; however there is a catch .. your score also includes your longevity (which the good people of the dome do not know). So if you have a long life, you end up in a better job and if you have a short life span you end up in a crappy job.
The story is about Riley and how she ends up in Recon (their version of a military) after her test scores are revealed as low (although surprise - her scores are off the chart and her vitality is low).
She is trained by Eli and they start to uncover why she was placed in Recon. They 'fall' for each other, but they can't be together as Eli is her commanding officer (yadda, yadda).
In general I like the theme of the story, but one item that bothers me is the excessive swearing. There is a lot of swearing which I think is rather lame. I'm not against swearing, but the author used the language as common language and it seems forced. I'd much rather have snide creative banter between characters (like The Darkest Minds) ... you know the stuff that makes you laugh, instead of F-this and that. Just my opinion.
I am reading the second book more or less out of curiosity and to see what happens to the characters.
I tend to be a tough reviewer. In part that’s because I’m a writer myself, but it’s also because I’ve read so much in my sixty-three years that virtually nothing strikes me as original any more. In particular, most dystopia fiction is both unoriginal and unaffecting, and Recon is unabashedly dystopia fiction.
I don’t remember the train of thought that led to my purchase of Recon. It looks like a typical dystopia novel. The sales blurb isn’t out of the ordinary. The hint of a blossoming romance between two prickly mavericks in a closed, highly constrained environment isn’t new either. The cover? Who am I, the writer with the worst visual-artistic taste in history, to judge covers?
But all that to one side, I bought Recon. And in all candor, wholly uninfluenced by any consideration other than my desire to give another indie writer what she deserves, I must say this book is excellent.
The scene setting is spare yet evocative; I had no trouble visualizing the compound in its hyper-functional starkness. The plot is deft and plausible, given the premise of a saturation nuclear bombing of the United States. The characters are excellently well developed; Miss Benner has a gift for concise yet striking depictions of her Marquee and Supporting Cast characters. The style is graceful, straight-up narrative in the currently favored first person multiple format. Alongside all that, I didn’t spot one single error from the first page to the last; the book has been meticulously proofread and edited.
Bravo, Miss Benner. I’ve already purchased Exposure. I look forward to recommending the series to everyone I know, so don’t disappoint me!
